Potential for Additional Federal Cuts to Maryland as Special Session Continues to Be Considered

Maryland Leaders Discuss Budget Challenges Amid Potential Federal Cuts

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — In a recent meeting at the State House, Maryland leadership focused on potential federal budget cuts that could impact the state’s finances. Senate President Bill Ferguson revealed a legislative analysis indicating that Maryland may face an additional $430 million in cuts primarily affecting housing, energy assistance, and water programs. This comes as part of President Donald Trump’s proposed budget, which is still pending congressional approval.

Ferguson emphasized Maryland’s preparedness with approximately $2 billion in reserve funds to address budgetary gaps. However, looming changes to Medicaid funding could necessitate a special session. "It will have such a disruptive impact on our healthcare system," he stated, highlighting the importance of maintaining healthcare coverage for vulnerable populations.

Republicans, led by Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey, urge re-evaluation of Medicaid eligibility, arguing the state covers individuals who can afford insurance. A joint committee has been established to monitor federal budget impacts, co-chaired by Ferguson and Speaker Adrienne Jones. As the situation evolves, Ferguson expressed skepticism about the likelihood of tax increases should lawmakers reconvene this year, focusing instead on possible cuts.
