Maryland Athletics News – University of Maryland Sports Update

Damon Evans Steps Down as Maryland AD to Join SMU

In an emotional announcement, Damon Evans revealed that he has accepted the role of athletic director at Southern Methodist University (SMU), marking a significant transition after a decade at the University of Maryland. Evans expressed pride in the achievements made during his tenure, notably over the past seven years as the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. Under his leadership, Maryland secured 49 Big Ten Conference championships and seven national championships, showcasing the strength and competitive spirit of its athletic programs.

Evans highlighted the development of robust facilities for student-athletes, including the Jones-Hill House, state-of-the-art performance centers for baseball and softball, and the impending opening of the Barry Gossett Basketball Performance Center. He emphasized the importance of community support and collaboration in these accomplishments and expressed gratitude for the relationships forged with athletes, fans, and alumni throughout his time at Maryland.

As he prepares to embark on this new journey, Evans acknowledged the difficulty of saying farewell to the Terp community. He thanked his wife, Kerry, and family for their unwavering support and extended appreciation to University President Pines for his partnership. In light of Evans’ departure, President Pines appointed Colleen Sorem as the interim athletic director. Evans praised Sorem as a trusted colleague and one of the top athletic administrators in the country, assuring fans that Maryland’s athletics are in capable hands.

Evans concluded by emphasizing that while he will embrace a new role at SMU, Maryland will always hold a special place in his heart. “Although I will soon wear different school colors, a big part of me will always be a Terp,” he stated.
