Florida Man and His Dog Found Dead in Suspected Bear Attack

Authorities are investigating a suspected bear attack after an 89-year-old man, Robert Markel, and his dog were found dead at his home near Jerome, Florida, on Monday morning. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spokesperson George Reynaud confirmed that the bodies were located within a couple of hundred yards from one another and indicated it was indeed a bear attack, although it remains unclear if the same bear was responsible for both deaths. The attack may have occurred at different times.

Following the discovery, wildlife officials established a perimeter around the area and deployed drones to search for the bear or bears involved. Additionally, bear traps have been set in the vicinity to capture the animal. DNA evidence was collected from the scene, which will aid investigators in determining more details about the incident.

The bear involved is likely to be a Florida black bear, the only bear species naturally found in the state. According to the FWC, there are approximately 4,050 Florida black bears inhabiting the region. The incident took place just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area, an area known for its wildlife presence. Authorities are working diligently to locate and apprehend the bear to ensure the safety of the community.
