Online Fundraiser for Woman Who Made Racial Slur Surges Past $675K Amid Controversial Backing

An online fundraiser for a Minnesota woman, who gained notoriety after a viral video showed her using a racial slur against a child of Somali heritage, has raised over $675,000. The page has attracted numerous donations accompanied by comments reflecting white supremacist sentiments, many from anonymous users or accounts with racist usernames. Some comments referenced Nazi symbolism, indicating a disturbing trend amongst contributors.

The woman was recorded in a public park, allegedly accusing the child of stealing from her son’s bag, and responded affirmatively when asked about her use of the racial slur. The fundraising effort was reportedly initiated by someone sharing her name, raising concerns about personal safety due to threats and leaked personal information.

Jacob Wells, co-founder of the crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo, announced that the comments had been disabled due to a significant influx of racist remarks but affirmed that funds raised would be distributed to the intended recipient once verification processes were complete. Heather Wilson, another co-founder, stated that funds would not be disbursed until the identity of the campaign organizer could be confirmed.

In contrast, the Rochester branch of the NAACP organized a fundraiser for the child involved in the incident, collecting over $341,000 and emphasizing their commitment to supporting the family and building a respectful community. The local police have completed their investigation into the altercation and submitted findings to the city attorney for review. While the woman’s fundraiser gained traction among certain groups, the now-closed NAACP page publicly expressed solidarity with the affected family.
