Grand Jury Indicts Cameroonian Man Living in Maryland

Maryland Man Indicted for Supporting Armed Separatists in Cameroon

Gaithersburg, MD – Eric Tataw, a 38-year-old Cameroonian residing in Maryland, faces federal charges for allegedly conspiring to support armed separatists in his home country. A grand jury indicted Tataw, known as "the Garri Master," late last month. He is considered a prominent figure within the Cameroonian diaspora, boasting a significant social media presence.

According to court documents, Tataw is associated with a separatist group aiming to create an independent nation called "Ambazonia," carved from the country’s English-speaking regions. The indictment details how armed militias, affiliated with this movement, engage in violent attacks against both the Cameroonian military and civilians to pressure the government into conceding autonomy.

Tataw is accused of inciting violence against civilians and government officials in Cameroon, allegedly advocating for brutal acts, including mutilation. The Justice Department’s Criminal Division Head, Matthew Galeotti, emphasized the severity of the charges, noting that Tataw’s actions could result in a maximum of 35 years in prison. Tataw faces five criminal counts as he awaits further developments in this high-profile case.
