An elderly female cat, now named Mirage, was discovered alive after surviving a nearly 400-foot fall in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, which tragically claimed the lives of her owners, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58. Their bodies were located on April 29, approximately 380 feet below Inspiration Point, where authorities believe they fell around April 28 or 29. Reports indicated that the couple had been living out of a U-Haul truck after traveling from Arizona, with their last known address in Florida.
Mirage was found in a soft-sided carrier, muddy and dirty, but resilient; she arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with fractured ribs, sore, and matted. The sanctuary announced that the 12-year-old cat was responding well to care, as she began eating and drinking independently. With the veterinary team’s dedicated attention, she is expected to make a full recovery. Judah Battista, the chief sanctuary officer at Best Friends, expressed admiration for the cat’s survival, describing her as a “very sweet girl” who is progressing well.
The incident highlights both a tragic loss and a remarkable survival story, bringing attention to the bond between pets and their owners. The community and animal sanctuary are now focused on ensuring that Mirage receives the care and support she needs as she begins her recovery journey.
