Dog Stays by Betsy Arakawa’s Side as Rodents Invade Property

State assessment found rodents on the property of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, but their main residence was not infested. Hackman, 95, died from cardiovascular disease, while Arakawa, 65, died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. They were found eight days after Hackman’s death. The couple’s daughters revealed their father’s decline, including memory issues and lack of knowledge of technology. The property had signs of rodent activity in garages, guest houses, storage facilities, and vehicles. A necropsy report suggested one of their dogs died from lack of food and water during the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa. Video showed one dog near Arakawa’s body, and another dead in a crate. The bodies were discovered by a maintenance worker and a security worker after concerns about Arakawa’s silence. The couple was described as private and did not hire housekeepers. The assessment reported live rodents, dead rodents, and rodent feces in various areas of the property. Hackman’s death was partially attributed to Alzheimer’s disease. Arakawa canceled an appointment due to Hackman’s illness the day before she was last seen in public. The property’s main residence was clean with no signs of rodent activity. The couple had three dogs, and two surviving dogs were taken by a friend. The couple’s family members cooperated with investigators and shared information about their declining health.
