Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland plans to travel to El Salvador this week and has requested a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele regarding the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported last month by the Trump administration despite having protected status in the U.S., is currently in a notorious prison camp in El Salvador. The Supreme Court has ruled that he must be brought back to the U.S.
Van Hollen stated that if Abrego Garcia is not returned by midweek, he will be traveling to El Salvador to check on his condition and discuss his release. The senator has also requested a meeting with President Bukele while he is in D.C. regarding the matter. Van Hollen has expressed concern for Abrego Garcia’s health, safety, and continued illegal confinement, and has emphasized the urgency of his return to the U.S. in accordance with the court mandates.
