Andrew Tate to stand trial in the U.K. for alleged physical and sexual abuse

Andrew Tate, a self-described misogynist and internet personality, is facing a trial in 2027 in Britain in four women’s civil lawsuits for alleged physical and sexual abuse, in a case that their lawyers say is the first of its kind about allegations of coercive control in the country. The four anonymous claimants allege that Tate subjected them to physical or sexual violence between 2013 and 2015, with allegations including threats with a gun and strangulation during sex. Tate denies the allegations, stating that all sexual activity was consensual. The lawsuit had its first preliminary hearing at the High Court, with Tate’s lawyer stating that he intends to give evidence in his defense at trial.

The claimants’ lawyer described coercive control as a form of grooming and manipulation where the victim becomes less able to respond normally. Tate and his brother Tristan are also under investigation in Romania for allegations of forming an organized criminal group, human trafficking, trafficking of minors, sexual intercourse with a minor, and money laundering, which they deny. They flew to the U.S. after the travel ban was lifted and returned to Romania to fulfill legal obligations. The trial is likely to start in early 2027, with the outcome potentially setting a precedent in the British legal system regarding the recognition of coercive control as intentional harm under English law.
