Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., has criticized the Trump administration for ignoring court orders by refusing to facilitate the return of a Maryland man mistakenly deported to a prison in El Salvador. Van Hollen believes that the courts should have the ability to sanction those who disobey their orders, including officials from the Trump administration.
During a meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele at the White House, Bukele stated that he does not have the power to return the man, Jose Abrego Garcia, and that the decision is solely El Salvador’s to make. The Supreme Court has urged the Trump administration to facilitate Garcia’s return, but they have not complied.
Van Hollen described the Trump administration’s position as “absolutely unsustainable” and expressed his intention to meet with Bukele to discuss Garcia’s release. If a meeting cannot be arranged in the U.S., Van Hollen plans to travel to El Salvador to address the issue directly.
Van Hollen emphasized the importance of allowing Garcia to return home and hopes that Bukele will understand the significance of releasing the man who is currently unlawfully detained in El Salvador. The case highlights the ongoing legal battle between the Trump administration and the courts over immigration policies and the treatment of individuals caught in the crossfire.
