Damon Evans, Maryland’s athletics director, will take on the same role at SMU

Damon Evans, the athletics director at the University of Maryland, has announced his departure to take on the same role at Southern Methodist University (SMU). During his time at Maryland, Evans led the athletic department to numerous successes, including 49 Big Ten conference championships and seven national titles. He also oversaw the development of new sports facilities for student-athletes. Evans described his decision to leave as one of the most difficult in his professional career, but expressed pride in the accomplishments during his tenure.

Following Evans’ departure, university president Darryl Pines appointed Colleen Sorem as the interim athletics director. Sorem, who has been Evans’ deputy director since 2018, is highly regarded in the athletic administration world and has been involved in major projects at Maryland. Evans expressed confidence in her abilities to continue the department’s success.

The announcement of Evans’ departure comes shortly after Maryland men’s basketball coach Kevin Willard revealed that Evans would be leaving for SMU. The new athletics director, whether it be Sorem or an outside hire, will have to address Willard’s contract negotiations immediately upon taking on the role. Despite Evans’ departure, the athletic department at Maryland is poised to build on its successes under the leadership of Sorem or a future hire.
