Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was transferred by medical aircraft from northeastern Brazil to the capital Brasilia after being hospitalized with abdominal pain caused by a bowel obstruction related to the long-term effects of being stabbed in 2018. Bolsonaro has been in and out of hospitals since the attack, undergoing several surgeries during his presidency from 2019-2022. He may undergo another surgery following this latest episode, described as the most serious since the attack.
Doctors in Rio Grande do Norte said Bolsonaro was stable and not in need of emergency surgery, but further procedures would depend on his recovery. The transfer to Brasilia was requested by his family and occurred Saturday afternoon. Bolsonaro was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz before being transferred to a hospital in Natal.
Bolsonaro was set to start a regional trip to promote his party’s right-wing agenda for the upcoming presidential election, despite being disqualified from running until 2030 due to allegations of abuse of power and undermining the electronic voting system. He has also been charged in connection with an alleged coup attempt, which included plans to poison and kill his political rival, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
