Maryland Drivers with Undisclosed Disabilities May Have Butterflies on Licenses

Maryland residents with “non-apparent disabilities” will soon have the option to place a butterfly emblem on their state ID or driver’s license thanks to “Eric’s ID Law,” championed by 20-year-old Eric Carpenter-Grantham and his mother Linda. The butterfly symbol will help indicate to others that the holder has a disability that is not immediately obvious, such as deafness, autism, developmental disabilities, or mental health issues.

The idea for the butterfly license came after a difficult conversation following the death of George Floyd in 2020. Eric, who has autism, expressed concerns for his safety to his mother, prompting the creation of the symbol. With plans to study political science and eventually become a pastor, Eric hopes the butterfly emblem will provide peace, hope, freedom, and change for individuals with disabilities encountering law enforcement. The bill has passed both chambers of the Maryland General Assembly and is awaiting the governor’s signature, with Eric and his family eagerly anticipating the signing ceremony.
