Maryland’s only nuclear power plant, Calvert Cliffs, which is celebrating 50 years in operation, was recently given exclusive access to Spotlight on Maryland. The plant, located near Lusby, generates over 40% of Maryland’s domestically produced energy and is a significant contributor to the state’s clean, carbon-free energy output. Each reactor at the plant generates over 900 megawatts, powering approximately 1.4 million homes daily.
The plant manager, John Phillippi, explained the intricate process of nuclear power generation, emphasizing the safety measures in place to prevent any potential hazards. Data from the U.S. Department of Energy shows that nuclear power plants are more reliable than other forms of clean energy. Constellation Energy recently announced a $100 million investment to upgrade the plant’s critical electrical systems and equipment.
Despite concerns about potential radiation contamination or health hazards, Phillippi assured that working at the plant posed little risk compared to everyday activities like getting x-rays or eating a banana. The plant’s commitment to safety and advanced technology ensures its continued operation for years to come.
