Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals with his 894th goal against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force by holding several scoring records, including most power-play goals and most goals scored for a single team. He is currently third in goals scored this season and has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies and three NHL MVP awards.

Ovechkin also led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs’ MVP. However, the team has not made it past the first round of the playoffs since then, despite their current position as first in the Eastern Conference and second in the NHL. Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and still has a contract with Washington through the 2025-26 season. His career achievement is a testament to his skill and longevity in the league, solidifying his status as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.
