Two special needs classroom assistants, Charnita Thomas and Angelette Boleyjack-Calhoun, were arrested and charged with assaulting three nonverbal children at the Academy of Innovation at Remington in Maryland Heights. The assaults were captured on surveillance camera, showing Thomas shoving and blocking a 7-year-old boy into a closet and pulling a 5-year-old girl by the arm, while Calhoun pulled a boy off a scooter and kicked it away. The Pattonville School District has acknowledged the arrests and placed the assistants on administrative leave. They had previously learned of concerns regarding the behavior of the accused and immediately contacted authorities to investigate. Both the Pattonville School District and the Special School District of St. Louis County expressed deep concern over the allegations and emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students. Thomas and Calhoun are being held on $25,000 bond. The incident has raised questions about employee conduct and the need for thorough background checks and ongoing training for school staff.
