Buzz Williams is reportedly set to become the new head coach at Maryland, according to reports from Inside MD Sports and the Field of 68. Williams, who is coming off a successful run at Texas A&M, was said to be interested in the Terapins’ job if Kevin Willard were to leave, which he did to move to Villanova.
Williams had a successful tenure at Texas A&M where the team made the NCAA Tournament in each of the three years he was there, with a record of 96-49. Despite losing eight key seniors to graduation, Williams has emphasized the importance of roster retention in college athletics.
Meanwhile, Willard’s future with Villanova remains uncertain following the team’s Sweet 16 loss. The Wildcats fell just short of receiving an NCAA Tournament bid this season, which was their first under head coach Kyle Neptune. Willard will be expected to maintain the high standard set by former head coach Jay Wright, who led Villanova to national titles and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
