Kermit the Frog selected as University of Maryland’s commencement speaker

The University of Maryland has announced that Kermit the Frog, the beloved Muppets character, will deliver the commencement speech for the class of 2025. This decision comes at a time when universities in the US have faced controversy over their choice of commencement speakers due to political tensions. Kermit, known as the “world’s most famous amphibian”, was chosen for his optimistic and insightful nature, as well as his connection to the university through Muppets creator Jim Henson who graduated from Maryland in 1960. The Muppets Studio plans for Kermit’s puppeteer, Matt Vogel, to voice and perform the character.

One graduating senior at Maryland expressed excitement for Kermit’s address, describing the character as relatable, wise, and human despite being a frog and puppet. Kermit has previous experience delivering a commencement speech at the former Southampton College, where he shared words of encouragement and humor with graduates. The university president, Darryll J Pines, expressed pride in welcoming Kermit to campus, highlighting the impact of the character in inspiring kindness and optimism among students.
