Damon Evans appointed as SMU’s new Athletic Director

Southern Methodist University (SMU) has chosen Damon Evans, current athletic director at the University of Maryland, as its new athletic director. Evans will take over the role from Rick Hart, who announced his departure after 13 years at the helm. Evans previously served as the athletic director at the University of Georgia and later moved to Maryland as an associate AD before becoming the top AD in 2018.

In a statement, Evans expressed his excitement to join SMU and capitalize on the momentum the university has in its athletics program. SMU has invested over $250 million in athletic facilities since 2013, including renovations to Moody Coliseum and a new football complex.

SMU’s football team made its debut in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff in their first ACC season. The university also recently hired Andy Enfield as the men’s basketball coach, and the team is currently competing in the National Invitation Tournament.

Evans’ appointment comes amidst the departure of SMU President R. Gerald Turner, who has been serving for 30 years. Jay Hartzell, the current president of the University of Texas, will take over as SMU’s president on June 1.

Evans’ departure from Maryland also coincided with negotiations with men’s basketball coach Kevin Willard on a contract extension and potential program changes. His experience and leadership will be crucial as SMU looks to continue its success in the ACC and build on its athletic programs for the future.
