Risk Reviews Urged for Dozens of U.S. Bridges Following Baltimore Collapse

Maryland officials failed to conduct a recommended risk assessment on the Baltimore bridge that collapsed after being struck by a ship last March, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The board’s chairwoman, Jennifer L. Homendy, stated that had the assessment been done, it would have revealed that the Francis Scott Key bridge was at serious risk of collapse from a ship collision. The collapse resulted in the death of six workers and disrupted port operations for days.

The NTSB also found that many bridges across the country, including iconic ones like the Brooklyn Bridge, have not undergone similar risk assessments, posing an unknown level of risk. The board has urged the operators of these bridges to conduct assessments and implement measures to reduce the risk of collapse. The lack of assessments for bridges in 19 states, despite the potential for ship collisions, has raised concerns about safety and the need for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies.
