The monetary impact of driving in Maryland

The deteriorating roads in Maryland, particularly in the Baltimore metro area, are costing drivers a significant amount of money each year. A report by TRIP estimates that Maryland’s roadwork costs total $12 billion annually, with nearly $3,000 per year per driver in the Baltimore area alone. The report also indicates that 62% of roads in Baltimore are in poor condition, leading to numerous calls to AAA for tire troubles and tow services.

Local businesses, such as Hampden Tires, are feeling the impact of the poor road conditions, with about 20% of customers requiring repairs due to potholes. Drivers like Nichole Burch and Kevin Bartram express frustration over the damage caused by potholes, with some even suggesting that the city should compensate for car repairs.

Despite the ongoing issues with road conditions, the Baltimore Department of Transportation has not responded to requests for comment. In the meantime, AAA recommends that drivers proceed with caution and keep a spare tire on hand to avoid further damage.
