Teens arrested for killing bicyclist in hit-and-run caught on video

A 13-year-old boy in Albuquerque has been charged with murder in a fatal hit-and-run of a bicyclist that was captured on video from inside the boy’s stolen car. The teenager, along with a 15-year-old, has been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of an accident, and unlawful possession of a handgun. An 11-year-old, who was also involved, is too young to be charged with murder. The 13-year-old is expected to be booked into the Juvenile Detention Center, while detectives are searching for the 15 and 11-year-olds.

The victim, Scott Dwight Habermehl, 63, was a cyclist on his way to work when he was hit by the car in May. The crash was recorded from inside the car and circulated on social media. In the video, the 13-year-old can be heard saying he is about to hit the bicyclist, and the 15-year-old encourages him to do so. The car then accelerates and hits the cyclist, with loud sounds of “metal flexing” heard in the recording.

The video was reported to police by a middle school principal after a student flagged it. The names of the accused individuals, who are all under 18, have not been released by the Associated Press. Police are working with the District Attorney’s Office and Child, Youth, and Family Services to determine the appropriate charges for the 11-year-old and whether he can be held on those charges.
