Parents urge Dominican authorities to declare missing Pitt student Sudiksha Konanki deceased

The family of missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has requested that police in the Dominican Republic declare her dead. Konanki, a junior in biology, went missing on March 6 while on a spring break trip with friends in the Dominican Republic. Despite an extensive search, her body has not been found.

The last person to have seen Konanki, identified as Joshua Riibe, has had his passport confiscated as part of the investigation. Riibe has been assisting authorities and has been confined to his hotel under police escort. He claimed that he was with Konanki on the beach shortly before she disappeared due to strong currents and high waves. He said they were talking and kissing when a wave swept them out to sea. He managed to get Konanki back to shore, but she disappeared shortly after.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have stated that no one is considered a suspect in Konanki’s disappearance, and U.S. authorities have classified it as a missing persons case rather than a criminal matter. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts to locate Konanki continue. The family is seeking closure by requesting a declaration of death, as Konanki’s body has not been found despite search efforts.
