Trump announces plans to build new FBI headquarters in Washington DC instead of Maryland

President Donald Trump has expressed his preference for the new FBI headquarters to be built in Washington, D.C. rather than in Maryland. Trump cited the need for the FBI and the Department of Justice to be near each other to support his plan for a Washington location. He also mentioned that FBI Director Kash Patel suggested using a former Department of Commerce building for the headquarters.

This is not the first time Trump has voiced his opinion against the proposed Greenbelt location. He has previously stated that the headquarters should be in Washington, D.C. to renovate and rebuild the city. The GSA had previously selected Greenbelt as the site for the new headquarters due to its cost-effectiveness and value to taxpayers.

Maryland’s congressional delegation, along with Governor Wes Moore, have expressed support for the Greenbelt site, emphasizing its proximity to necessary government agencies. The GSA had also considered Landover and Springfield, Virginia as options for the headquarters, but ultimately chose Greenbelt as the best choice for transportation access.

The decision to build the headquarters in Maryland would bring more jobs to the state, which is facing economic challenges due to federal funding cuts and job losses. Despite Trump’s objections, Maryland officials are committed to bringing the headquarters to the state as planned in 2023.
