A recent study by MediBuddy, a digital healthcare platform, has revealed that a silent health crisis is unfolding in India, with over 57% of corporate men and nearly 50% of women suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency. The study, which analysed data from around 4,400 urban corporate employees, points towards inadequate dietary intake, demanding schedules, erratic eating habits, and high stress levels as the main causes behind the rise of this deficiency. Dietitian Vidhi Chawla highlights that vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products, making vegetarians particularly vulnerable.
Dr Archana Batra, a dietitian and certified diabetes educator, points out that lifestyle changes such as frequent consumption of over-processed foods, alcohol, and excess caffeine, as well as heightened stress levels among corporate employees, contribute to reduced B12 absorption and depletion of B12 reserves in the body.
Early signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, tingling sensations in hands and feet, memory problems, and mood swings. A sedentary lifestyle, high work stress, and poor gut health worsen B12 deficiency, making it harder for the body to absorb essential nutrients.
To reverse B12 deficiency, Dr Batra recommends including B12-rich foods in daily meals, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, taking short breaks at work, engaging in light physical activity, managing stress through meditation, and ensuring proper gut health. It is also crucial to get an annual vitamin B12 test, particularly for vegetarians and individuals with chronic fatigue or digestive issues, to ensure early detection and timely intervention.
