Trial delayed for Maryland woman accused in fatal work zone crash on I-695 in 2023

Maryland woman, Lisa Lea, charged with crashing into and killing six construction workers on I-695, has her trial postponed until November. In March 2023, Lea was driving over 100 mph and collided with another driver, leading to the fatal crash. The NTSB investigation revealed Lea had THC in her blood and may have been impaired by medication. She attempted to switch lanes at high speed, causing the crash. Lea’s trial, originally set for April, has been rescheduled due to a postponement request by her attorneys.

The crash prompted Gov. Wes Moore to create a Work Zone Safety Work Group, leading to new state laws increasing fines and speed cameras in work zones. The family of one victim sued Concrete General and the state for failing to maintain a safe work zone, alleging negligence in implementing safety measures. The NTSB report cited a lack of a truck-mounted attenuator and missing warning signs as contributing factors to the crash. Lea will appear in court on November 3 to face charges of manslaughter and negligent homicide.
