City shines bright for three-day light festival

Leicester City Centre Glows with Three-Day Festival of Light

Leicester city centre is currently aglow with the start of the three-day Light up Leicester festival, which began on Wednesday with a procession led by hundreds of schoolchildren. Art installations have been set up at eight locations, including the illuminated cathedral showcasing a digital lightshow depicting the city’s history, including the discovery of King Richard III’s remains.

The Leicester City Council aims to draw tens of thousands of visitors with this free event, which is being held for the first time since 2022 when 80,000 people attended. On Thursday, an illuminated bike parade will take place, followed by a dance performance dubbed The Holi Experience at the Clock Tower on Friday. The festival will conclude on Saturday with an illuminated horse parade down New Walk.

Various art installations such as a giant bubble-inspired structure, a kinetic sculpture, geometric hoops of light and sound, and more can be found throughout the city centre. Simon Jenner of the Leicester Business Improvement District praised the partnership involved in creating this event, calling it “truly special for the city.”
