Man incarcerated for 1975 Howard County cold case after recovered evidence closes case

A 50-year-old cold case in Howard County was recently closed when police announced that Charles William Davis Jr., a convicted killer already serving a life sentence in Maryland, had confessed to the murder of 20-year-old Roseann Sturtz in 1975. Roseann was last seen alive outside a club in Baltimore and her body was found in a wooded area near an industrial park. Corporal Wade Zufall took over the case in 2022 and discovered evidence linking Davis to the crime, including a 1981 letter offering immunity in exchange for information about Sturtz’s death. Zufall corresponded with Davis and eventually got him to confess during an interview. Davis confessed to strangling Sturtz after an argument. Despite the confession, Davis cannot be charged due to the immunity deal from 1981. Sturtz’s family expressed gratitude for getting closure after all these years. The case was the second oldest cold case in Howard County, with the oldest being the homicide of an unidentified woman in 1971.
