The Maryland Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the Maryland State Board of Elections against a website and social media accounts named “No Moore” that are critical of Gov. Wes Moore. The party alleges that the anonymous accounts violate state regulations by not being attributed to a registered political committee. The No Moore accounts have been attacking Moore’s record, particularly focusing on his proposals to raise taxes.
The accounts use images and graphics, including edited photos of Moore, to convey their anti-Moore message. Some of the images contrast Moore with former Gov. Larry Hogan, suggesting that Moore has been responsible for tax and fee increases while Hogan implemented tax and toll cuts during his tenure as governor. Hogan, who lost a bid for the U.S. Senate last year, has not made any announcements about his political future.
The No Moore website and social media accounts have an authority line that reads “Paid for by NoMoore.org,” but the entity is not listed in the state’s campaign finance database. The Maryland Democratic Party’s executive director has called for an investigation into No Moore for failing to register and failing to use proper authority lines. The party believes that Marylanders deserve to know who is behind the anti-Moore messaging and that law should not be skirted through anonymous social media accounts.
