Haitian immigrants face uncertain future as TPS expiration date approaches

Geslain Luma, a Haitian immigrant, was granted temporary protected status (TPS) in the US on the same day that President Trump announced plans to end the program by August 2025. TPS has allowed thousands of Haitians to work legally in the US and avoid deportation due to political instability and violence in their homeland.

Haiti has been facing a crisis with armed gangs controlling parts of Port-au-Prince, resulting in violence, homelessness, and starvation. The decision to end TPS leaves around 500,000 Haitian immigrants in the US with an uncertain future, forcing them to decide whether to fight for legal status in the US or return to Haiti.

In New York, where a significant Haitian community resides, fears of deportation are high. The Evangelical Crusade Christian Church in Brooklyn has been a sanctuary for Haitian immigrants for decades, offering various services to help the community.

Abigail Desravines, a Haitian immigrant who came to the US after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, highlighted the challenges and instability that come with living under TPS. The end of the program will disrupt the lives of TPS holders who have built their lives in the US, with many facing deportation back to a crisis-ridden Haiti.

Advocacy groups are calling for legislative action to protect TPS holders and provide a pathway to residency for those who have lived in the US for years. A lawsuit has been filed to block the early termination of TPS for Haitians, and communities are hoping for a change in policy to offer relief to those facing deportation.
