Maryland Attorney General Takes on Trump over Federal Layoffs

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is leading a coalition of 20 democratic attorneys general in a legal battle against the Trump administration’s mass firing of probationary federal employees. The attorneys general have filed a lawsuit and a temporary restraining order against the federal agencies responsible for the layoffs. The lawsuit alleges that the government did not follow proper procedures in downsizing and is causing irreparable harm to states and affected workers. President Donald Trump has defended the job cuts as a way to slash federal spending and get rid of non-performing employees. However, the attorneys general argue that the mass firings are an effort to downsize the federal workforce without following the required laws and regulations. They are seeking to reinstate the unlawfully fired employees and stop any further similar terminations. Maryland, which has an estimated 160,000 federal employment jobs, would be severely impacted by the layoffs, with 10,000 employees in probationary status. Recently, an independent agency reinstated almost 6,000 probationary workers at the Department of Agriculture, suggesting that the mass layoffs did not follow the law. The coalition continues to fight for the reinstatement of impacted probationary employees and to hold the federal government accountable for its actions.
