Man receives 105-year sentence for killing Dutch soldier outside Indiana hotel

An Indiana man, Shamar Duncan, was sentenced to 105 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Dutch solider Corporal Simmie Poetsema in downtown Indianapolis in 2022. Duncan admitted to firing the shots after a fistfight but claimed he did not intend to kill anyone. The Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears called the shooting a tragic combination of guns and alcohol. The soldiers, who were members of the Dutch Commando Corps, were shot outside the hotel where they were staying. Duncan was convicted of murder, attempted murder, battery, and disorderly conduct. During the trial, Duncan testified that he fired out of anger after the fight but did not have a clear intent to kill anyone. His attorney argued that he acted in blind rage and did not have time to form a clear intent. Duncan was sentenced to a 60-year term for murder, 35 years for attempted murder, and 10 years for battery, all to be served consecutively for a total of 105 years in prison. The prosecutor emphasized that Duncan’s decision to escalate the conflict led to the tragic death of Corporal Poetsema and the injury of two other soldiers.
