A Delta Air Lines flight returned to Atlanta shortly after takeoff on Monday morning due to possible smoke in the aircraft. Flight 876 was en route to South Carolina’s Columbia Metropolitan Airport but landed back in Atlanta after only 35 minutes in the air. The flight crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta when a haze was observed inside the aircraft. Passengers were seen covering their mouths and noses in a video uploaded to social media. There were 94 passengers on board the Boeing 717 aircraft, and slides were deployed following landing for the evacuation. Atlanta Fire Rescue assisted in deplaning all passengers. A video uploaded to TikTok showed the moments following the evacuation on the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident, which is the second smoke-related incident to impact a Delta flight within a week. Just two days earlier, an Australia-bound Delta flight returned to Los Angeles International Airport due to smoke in the galley.
