Maryland Today | Journalism Center Receives $1M Grant for Developing New AI Tools

The Scripps Howard Foundation has announced grants of $1 million each to the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland and Arizona State University to empower journalists with artificial intelligence tools. The three-year grants will allow the centers to develop AI applications to support local news.

The Howard Center at UMD’s Merrill College of Journalism will use the grant to develop tools such as the Beat Book, AI Reporter’s Tool Box, AI Meeting Watchdog, and Visibility for Local News Project. These tools aim to improve coverage, streamline workflows, monitor government meetings, and amplify local news visibility on search engines and social media.

The UMD Howard Center has won numerous journalism awards for innovation and collaboration, with projects including building sensors to study climate change effects in Baltimore neighborhoods, analyzing lottery customer demographics using mobile-phone data, and creating an AI database of U.S. House members’ travel. Dean Rafael Lorente expressed gratitude to the Scripps Howard Foundation for their support in transforming journalism through AI.
