Governor Kathy Hochul announced murder charges in the death of Robert Brooks, who was beaten by guards at an upstate New York prison. Six correctional officers were charged with second-degree murder, gang assault, and manslaughter, while 17 employees were suspended. Bodycam footage showed Brooks being attacked while handcuffed on an infirmary bed. He died the next day from compression of the neck and blunt force injuries. Hochul terminated 14 workers at the facility and the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association stated that the incident was not reflective of their work. Brooks’ family filed a civil complaint accusing 17 people of excessive force in connection with his death.
