Maryland’s sports wagering market had a successful month in January 2025, generating $8.2 million in contributions to the state. This marked the fourth-highest single-month total since the industry launched in 2021. The revenue from sports betting supports the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, with nearly $54.8 million contributed since the start of the fiscal year. In January, Maryland bettors placed wagers totaling $618.8 million, with mobile sports betting accounting for the majority of the bets.
The state currently operates 11 mobile sports wagering platforms and 13 retail sportsbook locations, providing a variety of options for bettors. Retail sportsbooks contributed approximately $160,000 in taxes, while mobile betting platforms accounted for over $8 million. The revenue generated is subject to a 15% tax, resulting in the $8.2 million contribution to the education fund.
Cumulatively, the sports wagering program has contributed over $143 million to Maryland’s education fund. Additionally, expired prizes have generated over $3.6 million for the Problem Gambling Fund. Maryland Lottery and Gaming oversees the sports wagering program to ensure compliance and transparency, with monthly financial reports published to keep the public informed.
Officials anticipate even higher contributions in the future as sports betting continues to grow in popularity. For those facing gambling-related challenges, Maryland offers confidential support through the Problem Gambling Help initiative. Overall, the success of the sports wagering market in Maryland is benefiting the state’s education fund and providing resources for responsible gambling initiatives.
