Legislators in Maryland advocate for a boost in unemployment benefits

A proposed bill in Maryland aims to increase unemployment benefits for federal workers and contractors facing layoffs or job loss. Currently capped at $430 per week, the bill, if passed, would raise the weekly benefit to $750, as well as increase allowances for dependents from $8 to $25 per dependent. The bill, championed by Maryland State Del. Lorig Charkoudian, comes at a time when the state is facing a $3 billion shortfall. Charkoudian proposes adjusting the taxable wage base to afford the increased benefits, ensuring a healthy trust fund to support the changes. Kali Schumitz of the Maryland Center on Economic Policy supports the increase, citing the current inadequacy of benefits for unemployed individuals and families. With federal agency cuts adding to economic concerns, constituents are worried but resilient. If implemented, this bill could provide much-needed financial support to those facing unemployment in Maryland.
