Tencent Holdings is testing the integration of DeepSeek’s AI search service on its popular super app Weixin. This move aims to enhance the app’s suite of services, including social networking, e-payments, and ride-hailing, by leveraging artificial intelligence technology. Users can now access DeepSeek’s AI search feature by clicking on the “AI Search” option within Weixin’s search bar during the beta test. This feature is currently unavailable in the overseas version of the app, WeChat. The integration of DeepSeek-R1, an open-source reasoning model released by the Hangzhou-based start-up, allows users to enjoy a more diverse search experience for free. This model has shown capabilities comparable to more advanced AI models from other companies but with significantly lower training costs. With 1.3 billion active users engaging with Weixin every month for various activities like chatting, sharing documents, watching videos, transferring funds, and shopping, the integration of DeepSeek into the app will put AI technology directly into the hands of a massive user base.
