Maryland National Guard opts out of Frederick Douglass parade participation

The Maryland National Guard has announced that they will not participate in the Frederick Douglass parade, citing guidance from the Department of Defense. In a memo, the National Guard stated that they are precluded from using federal resources to host celebrations related to cultural awareness months, including National African American/Black History Month. The event was organized as part of Black History Month celebrations, which the National Guard cannot support under the new guidance. Although the parade has been canceled, other events surrounding celebrating Frederick Douglass will continue as planned. The full memo detailing the decision can be found on the Maryland National Guard website.

The Department of Defense has also issued a statement regarding identity months, stating that they will no longer use official resources to host events related to cultural awareness months. Service members and civilians are still permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours. WMAR-2 News has reached out to the governor’s office for comment on the situation.
