Major east-west interstate closed after two fatalities in Wyoming highway tunnel pileup

Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash inside a tunnel on Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming, causing authorities to shut down traffic in both directions. The crash occurred in Green River and resulted in injuries to others, although details were not yet available. The tunnel was evacuated, and black smoke could be seen billowing from an exit tunnel. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office described the crash as a multivehicle pileup with an active fire and explosion threat. Governor Mark Gordon called the crash a tragedy and directed agencies to offer aid and assistance to the injured and those who suffered loss. There was no estimate for reopening the highway as personnel inspected the tunnel for damage.

Representatives from a local hospital and the medical examiner did not immediately provide information on the number of injured individuals. The region was under a hazardous weather outlook for snow, and the transportation department reported slick and slush-lined roads on Interstate 80. Green River, where the crash occurred, is a city with a population of more than 11,000 in the southwest corner of Wyoming. The incident is still under investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as the situation develops.
