All public schools in Maryland are now required to teach about gender identity and sexual orientation following the passage of a bill by the Maryland House of Delegates. The legislation updates the state’s health education framework to include age-appropriate lessons on creating a healthy lifestyle, safe internet and social media practices, and gender identity and sexual orientation. The bill aims to ensure that all jurisdictions in the state are compliant with the existing framework set by the state board of education.
The bill also addresses the issue of parents opting their children out of certain lessons, particularly related to gender identity and sexual orientation. Lawmakers have made these topics a separate area of study to prevent parents from opting out of these crucial lessons. Additionally, the bill includes internet safety education in schools’ health curricula to teach students about safe and appropriate social media and online behavior.
Despite passing the House multiple times, the bill has never made it out of committee in the Senate. The bill’s sponsor, Vanessa Atterbeary, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all students receive comprehensive education on gender identity, sexual orientation, and internet safety.
