DOGE Begins Overhauling a Crucial US Technology Agency

Dozens of workers at the Technology Transformation Services within the US General Services Administration were reportedly fired on Wednesday afternoon, with the cuts primarily targeting probationary and short-term employees. The terminations included members of programs like the Presidential Innovation Fellowship and the US Digital Corps. Sources indicated that the number of employees let go could be upwards of 70 out of around 650 total TTS employees. The fired employees were expected to receive formal termination emails later in the evening, with their last day being March 7.

The firings are part of a larger initiative to rightsize the federal workforce, according to a GSA spokesperson. The agency has been working to implement executive orders related to workforce reductions, meeting OPM memo requirements regarding probationary periods. The vision for the TTS under new leadership is to operate like a startup software company, focusing on AI, automation, and data centralization.

The reductions in headcount come as the agency plans to launch a custom generative AI chatbot, known as “GSAi,” to increase productivity and analyze data. The agency is also looking to cut costs by selling federal buildings and encouraging employees to return to in-person office work.

The firings coincide with similar reductions at the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and come as the Trump administration moves forward with plans to reduce the federal workforce. The story is still developing, and updates are expected.
