Gov. Wes Moore and the Maryland Transportation Authority are set to reveal the new design concept for the Francis Scott Key Bridge at Tradepoint Atlantic. The design is the next step in a project focused on enhancing safety, accessibility, community connections, and economic growth. The unveiling will take place at a news conference at Tradepoint’s Sparrows Point facility, attended by Moore, Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld, and MTA Executive Director Bruce Gartner.
The need for a new design comes after a tragic incident in 2024 when the Dali container ship crashed into the Baltimore bridge, causing a section to collapse and resulting in the death of six highway construction workers. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is ongoing, and officials have committed to holding those responsible for the crash accountable. The replacement bridge is projected to be completed by October 2028 at a cost of $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion, with full funding approved by Congress.
Construction on the new bridge is set to begin soon, following the collection of soil samples and mapping of subsurface waterways. Officials assure minimal noise impacts and traffic disruptions during the process, with navigation on the Patapsco River largely unaffected. The project aims to not only rebuild the bridge but also improve the surrounding community’s infrastructure and connectivity.
