Leader of Neo-Nazi group convicted for planning attack on Maryland power grid

A founder of a neo-Nazi group, Brandon Russell, was found guilty of conspiring to attack Maryland’s power grid in a terrorist plot. Russell was convicted of one count of conspiracy to damage an energy facility after planning with Sara Beth Clendaniel to blow up several BGE substations in the Baltimore region in 2023. Russell, a co-founder of Atomwaffen Division, admitted to holding national socialist beliefs and subscribing to accelerationism. Clendaniel accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Russell and Clendaniel planned to obtain a high-powered rifle to shoot through substations over three months, aiming to cause a “cascading failure” of the power grid. Prosecutors estimate the attack would have resulted in $75 million in damages and widespread power outages. Russell has a criminal history, having been previously sentenced to five years in federal prison for possession of explosives. The plot was foiled after police responded to a double homicide at an apartment where Russell, Clendaniel, and the alleged suspect lived, all active members of Atomwaffen Division. Russell’s room contained neo-Nazi and white supremacist propaganda, along with various extremist materials.
