Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for his involvement in dog fighting and animal abuse. Authorities seized 107 dogs from his property in November 2022, with evidence linking him to dog fighting activities. Burrell denied the allegations in court, but was found guilty by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals.
The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported seeing dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property in Dallas, Georgia. Law enforcement officials, including prosecutors and sheriff’s deputies, conducted a search with a judge’s permission and found signs of abuse, including malnourished dogs lacking food, water, and shelter. Dogs were found restrained with logging chains, a tactic used to build aggression in fighting dogs.
Burrell’s property contained evidence of dog fighting activities, including a treadmill for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick used to pry open the jaws of fighting dogs. A veterinarian found dogs with removed teeth and scars from fighting. The seized dogs were taken in by a nonprofit organization for care.
Among the rescued dogs was Baby Shark, an eight-week-old puppy intended for fighting. Prosecutors praised the judge’s decision to sentence Burrell to the maximum allowed by law, calling it the longest known sentence for dog fighting. Burrell has the option to appeal, but it is unclear if he will do so.
