Rubio’s labeling of North Korea as a ‘rogue state’ draws criticism from the country

North Korea criticized Secretary of State Marco Rubio for calling it a “rogue state,” stating that his remarks were “coarse and nonsensical” and would not benefit U.S. interests. This marks the first direct criticism of the Trump administration from the reclusive state. The comments from North Korea indicate that they are not interested in negotiations over their weapons programs, despite President Trump expressing a desire to resume meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson for North Korea referred to Rubio’s comments as an example of the unchanged hostile policy of the U.S. towards the country. Rubio had made the “rogue state” comment in a media interview, likely referring to his interview with Megyn Kelly where he described North Korea and Iran as rogue states.
While it is common for U.S. officials to use such language regarding North Korea, Trump drew attention last month when he referred to North Korea as a “nuclear power,” a term typically avoided by U.S. officials. Despite Trump’s positive remarks about Kim, North Korea has not responded, and Kim’s weapons testing and aggressive rhetoric continue unabated. In recent weeks, North Korea has conducted several weapons displays, including the testing of ballistic missiles, a hypersonic intermediate-range missile, and strategic cruise missiles.
