Keyser dominates Hampshire in Western Maryland Classic as Southern outperforms Northern | Local Sports


Southern High School’s girls basketball team claimed a dominant 60-24 victory over Northern at the Western Maryland Classic. Joycelyn Ward and Carly Wilt led the way with 17 points each, despite some uncharacteristic turnovers and missed shots. Head coach Landon Todd acknowledged that it was not their best performance, but was glad to come out with a win.

The Rams controlled the game, leading 20-7 after the first quarter and extending their lead to 42-16 heading into the fourth. Ward’s 12 points in the final quarter and Wilt’s four 3-pointers sealed the victory. Northern’s Ainsley McHenry-Sorber led her team with eight points.

This game was part of the Western Maryland Classic, showcasing top high school basketball teams in the country. Todd highlighted the importance of defense and smart offensive plays observed during the showcase. Both teams are set to play their next games on Monday, with Southern facing Fort Hill and Northern taking on Allegany.

In another game, Keyser secured a 62-36 win over Hampshire with Bibs Felton leading with 20 points. Austyn Healy’s impressive performance in the third quarter propelled the Golden Tornado to victory. Keyser will face off against Berkeley Springs next, while Hampshire will host John Handley.
