Maryland football has made a significant coaching move by hiring Pep Hamilton, a longtime NFL assistant, as their new offensive coordinator. What makes this hiring unique is that Hamilton’s son, Jackson, also signed with the Terrapins, making it a true family reunion. At 50, Hamilton brings with him an extensive coaching background that includes working with multiple NFL teams and coaching notable quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and Andrew Luck.
Hamilton, a Howard University graduate, has deep roots in college football as well, having served as an assistant head coach and passing game coordinator at Michigan. He had previously been considered for Maryland’s head coaching job on two occasions before finally landing the offensive coordinator role.
The timing of his arrival couldn’t be better as he will now have the opportunity to coach his son, Jackson, who is a promising quarterback prospect from Texas. Jackson, a three-star recruit, showed promise during his sophomore season in high school, and his potential was recognized early on with scholarship offers.
Maryland had a rough season in 2022, finishing with a 4-8 record overall and a disappointing 1-8 record in the Big Ten. With the addition of Hamilton and the excitement surrounding his son’s recruitment, Terrapins fans have new hope for a turnaround in the upcoming season. It seems that blood truly is thicker than water in College Park this season.
