Maryland lawmakers seek to categorize high school sports based on genetic gender characteristics

A group of Maryland legislators are pushing to prevent biological males from playing high school girls’ sports, citing safety and ethical concerns. Del. Kathy Szeliga introduced a bill that would require sports to be classified for biological males, females, or coeducational. A bipartisan group of senators also introduced a similar bill. A recent poll showed that 76% of Marylanders oppose allowing biological males to participate in girls’ sports. The lawmakers argue that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports gives them an unfair advantage and discriminates against biological girls. Del. Szeliga views the issue as a matter of women’s rights and ensuring the safety of female athletes. The legislation is being considered by the House Ways and Means Committee, and if successful, it could bring the bill to the governor’s desk. The bill aims to prevent incidents like a high school volleyball player in North Carolina who suffered a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a biological male player. Public school districts in Maryland follow guidelines set by the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association and Maryland State Department of Education, while private schools have not commented on their policies regarding biological males participating in girls’ sports. Del. Szeliga’s bill has garnered bipartisan support and she hopes it will protect the integrity of women’s sports in Maryland.
