Maryland lawmakers and governor consider nuclear power as solution for energy gaps during transition to green energy

Two bills before the Maryland General Assembly could fast-track nuclear power plant construction to address the state’s energy generation shortfalls due to green energy priorities. State Sen. Benjamin Brooks is leading the bipartisan Decarbonization Infrastructure Act, aiming to include nuclear energy as a viable source in the state’s renewable power generation guidelines. Brooks emphasized the need for steady energy generation, pointing out that nuclear plants operate more consistently and reliably than wind or solar systems.

Despite concerns about nuclear energy safety stemming from past accidents such as Three Mile Island and Fukushima, Brooks argues that Gen4 technologies are much safer. Gov. Wes Moore has introduced a similar bill further promoting nuclear energy in the state. Critics, like Jorge Aguilar from Food and Water Watch, are worried about the environmental and health risks associated with nuclear energy, questioning the priorities in achieving clean energy goals. Nevertheless, Sen. Brooks and the governor are pushing for nuclear power as a clean and reliable option for meeting Maryland’s energy needs.
